UK retailers protected from ‘aggressive rent collection’

A temporary ban has been imposed on commercial landlords in the UK from initiating legal action against tenants that have not paid their rent, to protect retailers and businesses during the COVID-19 crisis.

The ban prohibits landlords from sending statutory demands, formal requests for payment, or winding-up petitions to their tenants until 30th June.

Previously the government had allowed commercial tenants to delay rental payments for three months without fear of eviction. The new and extended measures will prohibit landlords from employing commercial rent arrears recovery, or sending in bailiffs, unless they are owed 90 days of unpaid rent.
