The labour party has promised to bring in rent controls and “put bad landlords out of business” if it wins power at next month’s general election.
Landlords letting out sub-standard property will face fines and rents in private sector accommodation will not be allowed to rise by more than inflation.
According to the Office for National Statistics, the private rented sector now accounts for 21% of households in England – a figure that has doubled since 1997.
