House prices to rise regardless of election result, warns Tony Blair’s institute

With the UK General Election only 7 days away, the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change has criticised the housing policies of both the Tories and Labour.

Founded by the former Labour Prime Minister, the institute points to the housing crisis as one of the major issues of the election. With this in mind it criticises both the major parties, suggesting that policies of neither will solve the problem and warns of house price rises.

Labour comes under fire for its plans for rent controls which are branded as “excessively interventionist” and would “lead to deteriorating standards in the private rented sector”. On the other hand Tory proposals for security of tenure among private renters would leave scope for backsliding.

The Liberal Democrats don’t escape criticism either. The analysis suggests that their policies would lead to a 16% rise in house prices by 2030, compared to 19% under Labour and 26% under the Tories.
