Government urged to extend coronavirus support to estate agents

As sales activity slows and house viewings drop due to the coronavirus, estate agents have urged the government to extend the business rates holiday to estate agent companies. Currently the concession only applies to retail and hospitality firms.

After the recent Conservative party election win, the increased certainty over Brexit had restored confidence to the property sector and the UK’s housing market looked set to bounce back in 2020. The coronavirus pandemic however has caused viewings to drop with people following recommendations to avoid social contact.

With agency offices classed as commercial space, and not retail, estate agents currently won’t benefit from the business rates relief promised by the government.
