Coronavirus legislation appears to water down eviction ban

The three month ban on evictions announced by the government last week appears to have been watered down in the Coronavirus Emergency Bill passed by Parliament yesterday.

Instead of the ‘complete ban on evictions and additional protections for renters’ affected by coronavirus, the bill only extends the notice period required from two months to three.

It is not yet known if this was an error in preparation of the bill due to the pressurised situation in which the government finds itself, or an intentional change of mind.
